Finding rusty old junk is fun! Nevertheless, I have found that no matter how much "stuff" I find and collect, only God can fully satisfy my heart. Matthew 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Shabby Autumn Fireplace

Hello friends! Have you already packed away your Halloween and fall decorations and are you getting ready for Christmas? To each his own, but I love autumn so much I am not ready to say goodbye. Our foliage really just changed last week, and that put me in a Thanksgiving mood! I think Thanksgiving decorating is just gorgeous. It's fall at it's most elegant, moving from early autumn's apple reds and bright pumpkin oranges, into  the warmth of  wheaten, brown, amber and bronze. I love November, and I relish the chance to enjoy fall's beauty for a few more weeks. On Thanksgiving night we traditionally buy our real tree and the Christmas decorating begins, but until then, it's still all about fall at our house.

Today I am showing you how I have decorated my fireplace for November. I wanted to do something for White Wednesday, so I got the idea to use mostly shabby-chippy whites for this display. I just looked around the house and garden for things to use. Last year I started putting my bird cage in the fireplace throughout the year and I have enjoyed changing the displays inside seasonally, but for Halloween this year I put my vintage Haunted House blow mold in the fireplace instead, which you can see in my last post. After Halloween I was glad to put the bird cage back, as it really just looks perfect there. As I was just writing this post, I had a funny thought. Can you imagine walking into a house years ago and seeing a rusty birdcage in the fireplace? You would think the home owner was nutty! Don't you just love the way we decorate with junk these days? Our homes really can be unique works of art using creative displays of the things we love most.

I am not even close to getting over my love of shabby-rusty-chippy vintage white groupings. I have moved on to other crushes such as galvanized goodies and farmhouse treasures, but my heart will always be shabby. The best thing about decorating with junk is not having to "subscribe" to one decorating style. I find that the more I combine, the better and more interesting the outcome. The key for me is keeping things vintage, so regardless of style, the items are unified by age.

I have also had this old antique mirror in the back of the fireplace for a while. I love how it reflects the whites and light.

Here is one of the pumpkins I showed you back in September in my Autumn garden post. I decided to bring it inside to enjoy through Thanksgiving, since the weather is getting cooler and I won't be out in the garden much more. I love the shape and soft hue.

I found this statue at an estate sale earlier this summer. He was in my garden until I decided I needed a little more shabbiness in this display and now that he's inside I doubt he will ever go back out. He will definitely be staying inside for the winter at least. I am sure you will see him again in my Christmas posts. I hope you will come back to see where he turns up at Christmas and that you will visit often over the holidays!

.
May your harvest be plentiful!

  1. It's a beautiful birdcage, Amber! I can see why you enjoy it in your fireplace. I also keep my Fall décor out through Thanksgiving. I start my Christmas decorating the day after Thanksgiving, especially since I'm not a Black Friday shopper. I can get a lot done that day if I'm motivated! : )

  3. I love your chippy fall decorating! I am posting my homemade Christmas projects on the blog, but don't decorate until much later. I love a fresh tree too much nearer to the 25th. Thanks for such a nice comment on my blog. So glad you stop by!

  8. Amber, I love Thanksgiving also. Now Christmas décor at my home yet. Other than I switched out a shelf with some red transferware plates that I found at a thrift shop. I love the little statue and the mirror and birdcage are perfect in the fireplace. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann
