Finding rusty old junk is fun! Nevertheless, I have found that no matter how much "stuff" I find and collect, only God can fully satisfy my heart. Matthew 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

One Year Blogger-versary, Great Junkin' Finds This year!

Happy One Year Blogger-versary to me! Thank you all who have followed along and have provided so much encouragement and inspiration through your amazing blogs. It has been an absolute joy to blog and it has been such a creative outlet for me. I enjoy my blog time and I have loved getting to know all of you. I am looking forward to the upcoming year!

As I am getting ready to change out my decor for fall, I want to take one last look around the living room at my favorite vintage trinkets and vignettes. All year long I have been adding my new junk finds in with my old collections. Soon I will be changing out my mantel, shelves, and overall decor for fall and Halloween. I normally rotate my displays seasonally, but I really love what I have out right now and I am not ready to part with it. So instead of packing everything away this year, I am going take out the misc. books from my old bookcase in the foyer and use it to display my everyday favorites.
If you've been following my blog for a while you may recognize some of these goodies from older posts or different vignettes I have highlighted in the past. I love the old bicycle especially. My favorite little dolly is taking a ride now, but when I switch out my mantle for Halloween, a bony skeleton will take her spot.

I just found the fireplace bellows last week. A couple of days later I bought the new Flea Market Style and a similar one is shown in the article "Make A White Turn." Gorgeous article by the way!

Junkaholics hoard. But, its good junk, don't ya think? So much fun stuff in this picture! My husband and I love old luggage and decorate with it throughout the house. This picture is an example of how I am still partial to adding warmth to our home by using different wood tones and leather even though I am so in love with whites and creams in abundance, and I plan to go lighter and whiter with some redecorating soon. I can never get rid of what I already love though, so I just mix it all up!

I loved filling the small luggage train case with dear things...

...like this picture of my beautiful grandmother Chloe, when she was 16.
She is still gorgeous at age 83.  I found the old needles this weekend and decided to add them to the display since she can sew like a dream and has done alterations to make a living in her senior years. Just a little ode to her.

...and my handsome Grandfather Johnson as a young man, just getting ready to go overseas for WWII. Love his heart, he endured much post traumatic stress from the war, and now at age 86 he is suffering with Alzheimers. He doesn't remember me most days, but he was always a sweet, handsome grandfather that I will always remember as he was before, and I still love dearly!

I loved the framed mannequin so much in my booth that I decided to do the same at home with my antique dress form. I was originally going to paint the frame white but decided against it since it was such a unique shabby peachy-pink.
Salvage rosettes painted and distressed, along with some of my old bottles are displayed on the window ledge. I like how the light comes through the bottles. I have gone against my long-held belief that window ledge decorating is cluttered and tacky in the living room because we leave our windows unadorned to highlight their character and let light in. Nevertheless, what I have on them now seems to work without looking cluttered. It actually looks vintage cottage the more I think about it. Wait, this is a vintage cottage. That's why it works!

Moving on around the living room, there is a lot more cool junk too see. Like these old buckles in a platter. I know, only we junkers would be thrilled about belt buckles on a platter, but that's the fun and creativity of it right? I know I am not alone in thinking this is a great display of cool junk! I bought a big basket of belt and watch buckles at the flea market for $1 and had no idea what I was going to do with them but I just liked them. I ended up using some of them on my embellished bottles, and I put the rest in this silverplate platter to enjoy.

Here are the little watch buckles in a jar. I love the lamp finial I used as a topper, and the chippy  porch post salvage piece too.
Below is the rest of the lamp. I just love it, it looks great on the little robin's egg blue side table. I got the lamp at a yard sale for $3.00. We really needed a lamp in the living room too, but I couldn't bring myself to buy a new one. It didn't have a shade and I was going to make a burlap one, but I found the Frenchy shade at Wal-Mart and it was the look I was planning to try to create. It irked me to use something "new" but it was only $10 and was perfect for our decor. The only problem was that the finial wouldn't work with that style of lampshade. I thought the finial was too pretty not to be seen so I used it on that little bottle with the buckles and its too cute.

Look at these great vintage matches that my husband found in an old machinist box at an estate sale.

The matchbox with the sailboats is my favorite. I love the little cigarette holder too.

These rusty fountain pens were also in the machinist box. Love triple prize finds!

And there are tons of old books tucked here and there around the house. I bought this electrician's book years ago at a yard sale for .25. I never pass up old books!

Here is a cool German one too.

More little vintage beauties of all kinds displayed on the picnic basket I just picked up at the flea market for $3.

An antique clothes brush doll, vintage change purse, old cabinet cards, mini transferware plates, twine, lace, doilies, silverplate creamer, wooden spindles, antlers, vintage books, and a little chalk-painted salvage drawer somehow come together to tell a story about life long ago.

Right now the dining table has everyday joys: Lace, hydrangeas, tarnished silverplate, stacks of antique ironstone and transferware, all junking finds. I love surrounding myself with all this vintage beauty, and my family loves and appreciates it too which makes it even better.

So many treasures, so much fun junking and blogging, and now pinning as well.  I feel that my eye has gotten sharper and my vintage and decorating appetite seems insatiable since meeting all of you and gaining such inspiration from your blogs. Who knows what treasures the next year will bring? We are getting ready for yet another renovation, but it will make room for new junk and change is coming,...
Can't wait... let the junking continue!

Apple Basket Makeover

I am spending more and more time dreaming in white in blogland, and I am happily addicted to pinning lovely whites and creams like crazy on my pinterest boards. In my own home I am still drawn to incorporating worn leathers and warm wood tones which add depth and a "lived-in" feel to the ethereal beauty of  my cottage white walls, white distressed furniture pieces and decorative accents. I love too many different decorating styles to ever have a completely white or strictly shabby chic decor, but I doubt I will ever back to putting much color on my walls even if the white/cream "trend" goes out. If trends revolve back to bold color, it won't matter...I am sold on whites for life! As a collector, I love the creams and whites on our walls because they provide the perfect back drop for my ever-evolving displays and vignettes. Despite having a lot of junk and collectibles, the walls create a sense of calm unity and the look is always pulled together.

I am now getting to the point that I find it hard to resist slapping white chalk paint on anything and everything because I am obsessed always so pleased with the results whenever I do. I was really sick with the flu last week and all I really felt like doing was pinning. All the inspiration was driving me crazy however, so here is what I did this weekend to satisfy my white cravings...

Earlier this summer I bought several old apple baskets at a yard sale, like the ones in the picture below. I love these types of baskets. So many memories of going to the market with my mom and seeing them filled with fresh produce.

Mine had been outside so it was a little warped and mildewy. I sprayed it with a bleach and water solution and let it sun-dry. Then I painted it with a homemade chalk-paint recipe. White love strikes again! I had some extra burlap so I adorned the basket with a generous bow. It turned out even better than I thought. There are so many uses for this basket, both functional and decorative, especially with fall coming. Even empty, it is still so pretty.

For now the basket is sitting in this chair. I recently found it at a yard sale for $1. Since it was already white and a little chippy I kept it just the way it was. No extra work. Score!

I stuffed the basket with a beautiful vintage chenille twin coverlet. Then I made a little stick bundle out of some broken chair spindles that I salvaged from some other furniture makeovers.

These leftover spindles from misc. broken chairs (previously brown) were
originally tossed out by the garbage, but
I thought they still had possiblity for crafts or decorative potential, so I brought them in and painted them white too!

Here is a prime example of why I chant the "use what you have" decorating mantra.  I love how this little spindle bundle turned out. Now it looks so pretty tied up with an old crochet remnant and scraps of burlap. And to think they were destined for the landfill!

I also put this sweet little book in the basket as a prop for the post photos. It was a surprise gift from my best friend when I dropped off her birthday gift. We all know it is better to give than recieve, but its still always fun to receive! In addition to its lovely cover, the book has the most tantilizing pictures of various French flea markets (on my life's to-do list). Until I actually get to make that dream come true, I will settle for wandering through the pages.

Enjoy your blog visit!

Demijohns

Hello everyone! Just a quick post about a demi-john I found for $1 back in late spring when my peonies were in bloom.

Demi-johns (Dames-Jeannes in French, or "Jimmyjohns" in South Eastern US slang) are large glass containers covered in wicker or burlap to keep out the light to protect the alcohol, or for protection during transportation. Many people choose to display them without the coverings due to the lovely colors and shapes of the bottles, or simply because the wicker is damaged. It wasn't until blogging that I became familiarized with these bottles, and I was intrigued after seeing the gorgeous displays and collections many of you have put together. I don't necessarily copy trends in decorating so I didn't specifically set out to find one, but when I happened upon mine for $1.00 I certainly snatched it right up!  I have also noticed them in the Pottery Barn and Ballard catalogs, and I have come to appreciate their old world charm. I vaguely remember my mom having one when I was very young.

Here is mine...a little tattered on the bottom, but for a dollar, how could I pass it up? Overall its in great shape and I had no idea how pricey they can get. $300 in Pottery Barn!

I'm sure this little beauty will appear in future posts once I have found the perfect spot for it. For now I am off to search for inspiration and while I'm at it, I'll share some of the images I find with you. Enjoy!

Pretty Little Post

We have already been back-to-school for a week! August is flying by and I have had no time for blogging, pinning, decorating, or junking lately and I feel so out of sorts. So this evening I decided to make some time to sneak in a "pretty little post" for White Wednesday and the upcoming weekend blog parties. Since I am short on time I am using some things that I had worked on and photographed earlier in the summer, but didn't get a chance to post. Its not a long post but there are lots of pretty little things in yummy whites and creams for you to savor!

To begin, I want to show you the first bottles I embellished back in the spring and early summer.

The first step of cleaning them is always the most tedious! They were so dirty that I decided to use antique sheet music to cover the bottles entirely. Then came the fun part of adding the vintage lace, buttons, burlap and some scrapbooking stickers. I really enjoyed working on them and I now I am totally hooked on embellished and altered bottles. I have since found other easier and more creative ways cover them: (http://junkaholicsunanimous.blogspot.com/2012/07/busy-embellishing-bottles.html).

Pictured above is the very first bottle I worked on which inspired several others. In the background you can see some of my favorite junk finds that I worked into a vintage vignette for this photo. Also, I just noticed that after the all of my attention to detail, I neglected to notice one of my son's Lego Star-Wars light saber pieces... No way I am editing that out. That's real life folks!

While I was working on the bottles I also experiemented with making some coffee filter flowers and paper flowers to put in the bottles.
My first was a very simple carnation with a vintage button in the center

Next I got brave and tried out a paper flower using antique sheet music with a vintage brooch in the center. This one was tricky, as the old music was fragile and ripped easily. I love it but for now I think I'll stick with the coffee filters or maybe card stock.
Love this small bottle too. It is topped by my first coffee filter mini-rose. It looks so similar to a dried rose its hard to tell the difference. I will definitely be making more of these!

I had this "F" sticker in my scrapbooking stash so I personalized this one.

While I was decoupaging away I decided to cover this cheap foam necklace holder to sell, but it turned out so pretty that I had to keep it. After all, I needed another way to display more vintage-blingy finds on my dresser. In the background is a Beethoven inspired bottle that I created and sold the next day in my antiques booth. Of  all the things I made, its the only one that I didn't hoarde for myself  decided to sell.
And lastly, a sneak peak of some of the things in our new shabby-romantic bedroom, the perfect place for lots of vintage dreams in whites and creams! Once I get back into the swing of things with school I will be posting the full  bedroom reveal. Until then, have fun blog-hopping!
